Peggy Squares


Peggy Squares date back to the 1930's depression days in New Zealand. They are designed to be made of real wool for warmth. Good blankets to keep people warm and for disasters.

The standard size is 6 inches. So cut a cardboard square (or paper), six inches and use it as a template. It is similar to modular knitting. Any needles and any wool can be used, if you have the right patterns.

The idea is for lots of women to knit the squares and someone else to sew them together. More cooperative this way. It takes a lot of time and money for wool. But the blankets are worthwhile when finished.

I also spin wool, ive got fleece to card and spin. But this takes ages. Buy wool from second hand shops. Knit the square and then wash it in cold water. Never use hot water. You can use a machine but only cold water, so the peggy squares dont shrink.

I can include my favorite pattern.

Cast on one stitch, knit into the front and back of the stitch, to increase. Knit to end and increase in last stitch. When it fits the template, start to decrease. Knit to end and knit together the last two stitches. This pattern works with any needles and any wool. Use common sense.

I am knitting for the LDS church this year. Winter has started here in the southern hemisphere. I am a member of the LDS church. I am saving to go to the temple in Hamilton. I live in Christchurch so I have to fly. There is only one temple in New Zealand and only one stake in Christchurch.

The idea is if anyone needs a warm blanket this winter or maybe send some to Tsunami hit regions near by in the Pacific. Wool is very warm. I also weave blankets but peggy sqaures is more cooperative. It does cost a lot of money to transport things to Samoa?

I have learned from older people and teaching people to knit is a seperate issue. Practise these skills. I forgot to say, weave in the ends of your knitting with a needle. Tidy.
